Reason for the Scan

You have lower back pain. This MRI checks your lower back bones and discs for slipped discs, narrowed spaces, or nerve pressure.

Procedure Details

MRI (magnet pictures) of your lower back with thin slices. Several views were taken on a 0.35T scanner without dye.

Important Findings

  • The normal back curve is reduced (flatter than usual).
  • Between the 4th and 5th lower back bones (L4/5), a slipped disc pushes backward and center. It narrows the main canal and side openings (nerve tunnels) and presses the nerves.
  • There is severe canal narrowing (tight spinal canal) at L4/5 with pressure on the bundle of lower nerves (cauda equina).
  • Between the 2nd and 3rd lower back bones (L2/3), a left-sided disc bulge narrows the left nerve tunnel and touches the left nerve.
  • Between the 3rd and 4th bones (L3/4), a mild disc bulge, but tunnels stay open.
  • Between the 5th lower back bone and the tailbone (L5/S1), a back disc bulge, but tunnels stay open.
  • Small fluid in the joints at L4/5 (facet joint swelling).
  • The spinal cord end sits at L1 as expected. Nearby soft tissues look normal.

Conclusion

A major slipped disc at L4/5 severely narrows the canal and presses nerves, including the lower nerve bundle. Smaller bulges are seen at L2/3, L3/4, and L5/S1.

Note of Concern

Contact your spine specialist urgently. Severe canal narrowing with nerve bundle pressure can need quick surgery to protect nerve function. Go to the hospital now if you have new leg weakness, numb inner thighs, trouble peeing or pooping, or loss of bladder or bowel control.
